Warning Signs Your System
Is About to Give Up

A hot water system rarely fails without warning first. Catching these signs early is the difference between a quick repair and a cold shower on a work morning.

Nothing but Cold
A dead heating element, pilot light, thermostat or gas valve is the usual cause.
Runs Out Too Quickly
Sediment eating into tank capacity, or an element that's on its way out.
Water Around the Unit
Tank corrosion, a spent anode rod, or a pressure relief valve that's failed.
Rusty or Discoloured Water
Points to internal tank corrosion or an anode rod that needs replacing.
Odd Noises from the Tank
Popping or rumbling generally means sediment has built up on the element.
T&P Valve Dripping
The valve is venting pressure — often a sign of overheating or a faulty valve.

Repair vs replace

Repair It, or Is It
Time for a New One?

This is usually the first thing you want to know, and we give you a straight answer — if repairing makes sense, we repair it; if it doesn't, we say so and lay out your replacement options.

Repairing tends to make sense when: the unit's under 8–10 years old, the fault is isolated to one part (element, valve, thermostat), and fixing it costs well under half the price of a new system.

Replacing tends to make sense when: the tank itself is corroded or leaking, the unit's past 10–12 years and racking up multiple faults, or it's an old inefficient model where a new one would genuinely cut your power bill.

Our vans stock replacement units for the most common setups, so a same-day swap is often possible without waiting on a supplier order.

Our process

Getting Your Hot
Water Back On

1
Tell Us What's Happening
Ring 08 8123 4567 and describe the symptoms. A few quick questions about your system type help us dispatch someone with the right gear already loaded.
2
Proper On-Site Diagnosis
We work through the power or gas supply, thermostat, element or burner, anode rod, valves and tank condition until we've found the actual fault.
3
An Honest Repair-or-Replace Call
Once we know what's wrong, we tell you straight whether repairing or replacing makes more sense — with a firm price for either option before anything starts.
4
Fixed or Fitted, Same Visit
Most repairs and plenty of replacements happen in one visit. We carry common parts and compact units on the van specifically to avoid a second trip.
5
Tested Before We Leave
We run a full test cycle, check every connection and valve for leaks, and confirm it's all working properly. Every job carries our workmanship warranty.
Common questions

Hot Water Repair FAQs

Electric storage units generally run 8 to 12 years. Gas storage and continuous flow systems stretch to 10 to 15 years. Solar and heat pump systems can reach 15 to 20 years if maintained well. Swapping the sacrificial anode rod every 5 years on a storage tank makes a real difference to how long it lasts.
Almost always, yes. A pilot that keeps dropping out usually points to a worn thermocouple — the safety device that cuts gas if the flame goes out. It's a common repair and we carry the part on the van. Occasionally it's a dirty pilot assembly or a gas valve issue instead, which we'll confirm once we're looking at it.
A straight like-for-like swap is usually 2 to 4 hours start to finish. Changing fuel type — say electric to gas — takes longer because of the extra pipework or wiring involved.
We stock the units and parts we replace most often, so a standard residential job can frequently be done same day. If yours needs something less common, we'll source it as fast as possible and give you a straight answer on timing.
Sometimes — state and federal rebate schemes come and go for upgrading old electric resistance storage tanks to heat pumps or solar. We'll let you know what's currently on offer when we're out at your property.
We work right across the Adelaide metro area. Check our service areas page, or just call 08 8123 4567 and we'll confirm straight away.
